Chapter Fourteen
Miranda Valley 4
The two miners did manage to get cleanish and return in time for them to depart, although it was a close thing. Kas asked what their names were, and as before the tall one was the only one that talked. âIâm Simeon, and this is Gus.â The two were still in worn down rags and carried little beyond the clothes on their back, each having a stick with a bundle of belongings wrapped up in a blanket around one end over their shoulders.
âCostache, these are the two miners we found. Iâm going to put them under you until we can secure a mine,â Kas said after introducing the two to the cianese man.
For his part, the smith looked them over and then snorted, before grilling them on their skills and knowledge. When he started going into different types of coal, Kas figured it was time for him to make a break for it.
Since they had such a large group, the guards did an off-schedule use of the lift. Reducing the time they had to wait for the lift by quite a bit, the people who had been waiting longer grumbled but didnât seem interested in angering a group of two drak and their guards. Forthan allowing the two groups who had waited for the longest on the trip helped reduce the grumbling.
Forthanâs retinue maintained the disciplined air that had epitomized their first interaction. The tribesmen did their jobs with a quiet efficiency that Kas envied. Each of the three that was accompanying them carried a backpack that looked to be stuffed so full that Kas doubted he would even be able to carry it, despite the stat gains he had acquired in the past few daysâ worth of work. The cianâs was almost double the size of the tribesmen, and from the clanking it made as he shifted, filled with heavy metal tools.
Shannonâs pack was about the same size as Kastiganâs, although she had acquired a thick, metal-shod walking staff with some sort of yellow crystal on one end. The other unbound seemed to make a point to ignore him, instead spending the trek down double-checking the latches on the dozen or so devices she had hanging from her belt. Now that he had a few minutes, most of them looked like variants on a wand, although two or three of them appeared to be some sort of metallic balls.
Shannon looked up as Kas was studying her belt and quirked an eyebrow at him, taking it as an opportunity to talk to the other unbound. âHey. So how does all that stuff work?â he asked, pointing to the belts.
âMost of it just requires I circulate mana through it, and then activate a skill. They all give me a slightly different response, and accuracy is based on how high my skills are.â Unbuckling one of the metal balls, she showed it to him. It consisted of a dozen metal bands in groups of three. âThis one called hona. Each band move separately, they end up all pointing at item I pick.
